Out To Protect Scholarship Application
 

The application period for our spring 2010 scholarship is closed. Please check back to this page for information about our next scholarship opportunity.

The scholarship application has two parts and both must be submitted to be considered for an award. All applicants must complete Part 1 - Applicant Information using this form. Part 2 - Demonstration and Verification may be completed using this form or by submitting an essay.

If you chose to write an essay, you must answer the same questions in Part 2 of this application form. Be sure to include reference information at the end of your essay as described in Part 2 of the application. You can provide as much additional information as you feel is important for the Board of Directors to know about you. All essays must be type-written, double-spaced, using a 12-pitch font, with 1 inch margins all around the paper. Essays must be emailed in either MS Word 2003 or PDF format. No other formats will be accepted.

Scholarship Requirements:

  • Identify as gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender, or straight ally and be "out" to your family, friends, and peers at the academy or law enforcement agency.
  • Be a recognized role model by your peers and supervisors.
  • Demonstrate use of the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics as a guide for decision making.
  • Demonstrate being able to graduate from your law enforcement training program.

Part 1 - Applicant Information

All scholarship applicants must submit complete answers to Part 1. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

14. Are you related to a board member? (If yes, explain in box 15)
15. What else would you like us to know about you related to the questions in Part 1?
16. How are you going to complete Part 2?

If you going to submit an essay, simply review the questions in Part 2 and be sure to answer each with as much detail as possible. Remember, you must demonstrate that you have met the scholarship criteria. Be sure to provide the reference information described in Part 2.

Part 2 - Demonstration and Verification
 
17. Describe how you have been recognized as a role model by your peers and supervisors as a gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender person, or straight ally working in law enforcement? Provide as many examples as you wish.
18. What does the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics mean to you and how have you used it as a guide for decision making? Provide as many examples as you wish.
19. Describe your achievements in the law enforcement training program including your current GPA and class standing or ranking. What have you discovered are your strengths and weaknesses? Provide evidence that you will graduate from the program.
20. After graduation, how do you plan to continue being an effective role model as a gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, or transgender person working in law enforcement? Describe strategies you envision using on the job.
21. Provide the name, telephone number, and email address for at least two members of the academy staff and two of your peers in class who can verify the information you submitted in this application. Be sure to identify their rank and position. (Please inform each person you list about this scholarship and that we may be contacting them)
